Fibular artery

A vital blood vessel supplying the lateral compartment of the leg.
The fibular artery is a branch of the posterior tibial artery that primarily supplies blood to the muscles and tissues of the lateral aspect of the leg. It plays a crucial role in providing necessary oxygenated blood to the lower leg, enhancing both nutrition and waste removal from these tissues.
Terminologia Anatomica
arteria fibularis
System
Circulatory system
Function
The fibular artery is essential for vascularizing the lateral compartment of the leg, which includes muscles that facilitate eversion and plantarflexion of the foot. By delivering blood to these muscles, it supports activities such as walking, running, and balance. Oxygen-rich blood from the fibular artery ensures that the muscles can function effectively, enabling movement while also maintaining overall leg health. Furthermore, it contributes to the nourishment of surrounding bone structures and connective tissues, playing a role in their maintenance and repair. In cases of injury or vascular compromise, the fibular artery can offer collateral circulation, helping to ensure continuous blood flow to the affected areas.
Location
The fibular artery originates from the posterior tibial artery, typically located near the midpoint of the leg. It runs laterally along the fibula (the smaller of the two bones in the lower leg) and enters the lateral compartment, where it branches into various smaller arteries. These branches ultimately supply blood to the peroneal muscles, along the outer surface of the calf, thus ensuring that this region of the leg receives adequate blood flow for its functions. Its strategic path ensures that it is positioned ideally to serve the muscles and tissues that require blood supply for their role in leg movement.
Did You Know?
  • The fibular artery is sometimes referred to as the peroneal artery, reflecting its association with the fibula.
  • In addition to supplying blood to the muscles, the fibular artery also has branches that supply the ankle and heel region.
  • Injuries to the fibular artery can lead to significant impairment in foot function, highlighting its importance in mobility.
